Learning Finite-Infinite Relations

Historic impasses exist between the small-scale universe of quantum theory, the human-scale universe of Newtonian physics, and the large-scale universe of relativity theory.

Our proposal is that all three scales are derivative of an infinitesimal-scale and the boundary conditions are defined by dimensionless constants like those used by George Stoney (1874, Dublin) [1] and Max Planck (1899, Berlin) [2], to calculate their natural units. Also proposed is that these units define the first instant of a finite universe. Given the dominant role of pi (π), these units manifest as an infinitesimal primordial sphere which opens possibilities to explore a bridge between the finite and the infinite.

Here is the first moment of space-and-time.

There is a derivative rate of expansion. As spheres per second, base-2 notation and cubic-close packing encapsulates within 202 notations. [3]

That chart establishes a fundamental continuity, symmetry and harmony between all four scales that also redefines space-time and infinity. [4] To grasp its depth, diversity, and scope, we propose using virtual reality tools to empower people to engage and explore the many perspectives well beyond simple words like these. Here are the makings of a new model of the universe and a paradigm shift of our understanding of it.


Virtual Reality (VR). A four-dimensional representation of reality, one of the most-simple and analogically-close applications is the virtual reality program, “Google Earth VR.” The first-generation, known simply as Google Earth, gave a person the capability to observe on a computer screen any place on earth that has been digitally encoded by satellite. Some of the earliest imagery being goes back to 1930 aerial photography. The earliest satellite imagery goes back to 1972 Landsat data. A person can tour cities and towns on earth, zoom in over mountains, rivers and seacoasts, over buildings and homes, and down highways and streets. Sometimes you can even go inside public places like airports, train stations, malls, and shops.

“Google Earth VR” is a natural extension of the work I first observed in 1979 at MIT’s Architecture Machine Group, Aspen Movie Map by Nicolas Negroponte and Andrew Lippman. Today, instead of touring a section of Aspen, Colorado, you can put on VR headset and experience every section of this world and it will be ever more dynamic with each passing day.

Our project is analogous but different.

We are introducing a Mathematically-Integrated View of the Universe (MiVu). Beyond the simple geography of the earth, this project will explore the geographies of the universe throughout time back to the first instant. Where Google is limited to an exceptionally thin slice of the 202nd notation (our most-recent history), MiVu-VR will take one through each of the 202 notations.

Help is on the way. The dynamics within each notation will require the insights of experts to begin to understand and simulate the realities within it. Today’s VR tools have largely emerged out of the gaming industry. Our challenge will be to to extend that current range of tools to empower the exploration of abstractions like the 31 dimensionless constants that define elementary particles. Such tools will open up the deeper dynamics of the universe.

So, without question, this is the beginning of a long-term project.

Also, this is an industry that is finally “happening now” because the world’s largest corporation are making huge investments in VR. Google Earth VR is leading the way. Most of the small virtual reality shops in cities throughout the world offer an array of possible experiences, yet none have a view of the universe based on 202 notations. All are currently using and developing 2.83 billion years transpired within Notation-202. which is 10.98 billion years long. The universe is calculated to be 13.81 billion years old.

This project will seamlessly incorporate Google’s work.

To populate Notation-201 will require using imagery that has been captured by scholars and scientists around the world. Since 1999 the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) has been mapping the universe. Requests are already being made to acquire rights to use their imagery and mapping. Others included in this data gathering exercise are the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) data, the European Space Agency (ESA) space observatory (2009-2013) and its maps of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR), and the NASA Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP).

We will consider and attempt to discern the uniqueness with every notation. Initially this work will necessarily have to jumping over some notations to points in space and time where there is data that has been collected. The next notations will be the large-scale structure formation beginning within the first 300 million years, i.e. within notation-197. We will then jump down to recombination — 370,000 years — within Notation-187. The Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP)formation, based on temperatures, is postulated between Notation 135 and 136.

We will consider and attempt to discern the uniqueness with every notation. Initially this work will have to jump over some notations to points in space and time where there is data that has been collected. The next notations will be the large-scale structure formation beginning within the first 300 million years, i.e. within notation-197. We will then jump down to recombination — 370,000 years — within Notation-187. The Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP)formation, based on temperatures, is postulated between Notation 135 and 136.

We will seek the cooperation of CERN labs and the images that they have of QGP when they simulated that process. There are many images and videos of that process that we will be requesting permission to use.

We will then have to introduce the concept of archetypal images so everything within the human scale universe can be used between notations 115-to-67. That’s as small as the academic community generally goes.

Within each notation there should be unique paths to explore the data streams back to the first notation and into the perfections of the dimensionless constants.


Significance. This project is a first-generation description of conceptual aspects of a finite-infinite relation and how the universe evolved from the first moment of time to this day.

Although these relations have been profoundly studied throughout the human history, at no time have these concepts become the basis for a theoretical construction project to see how this universe emerges and to reduce it all to imagery that can be part of a virtual reality tour of the finite universe and the perfections of the infinite.

Besides being referred to as the “Mathematically-integrated View of the universe,”
this project will be known by many possible working titles which could include “Entering the Mind of God” for all those within the religious communities.

Generally, those three primary facets of pi (π) will be the penultimate description of the nature of infinity; that is continuity, symmetry and harmony. Within and throughout every notation of the finite those facets of infinity will be identified.

It is a comprehensive mathematical model that has a definitive finite-infinite relation that is informed by logic, reason and simplicity. It has no less than 64 base-2 notations for historic disciplines like string theory and Langlands programs.

Much, much more will be uncovered.


Outputs will be quite varied, but hopefully substantial. This new Virtual Reality (VR) experience should stimulate the general public to discuss the universe and Infinity. This project should challenge people to adopt a mathematically-integrated view of the universe. An inherent STEM tool, this virtual reality experience should open both the mathematical and the spiritual mind. People will have entered a dramatic mix of finite experiences throughout space-time as well as entered dimensionless constants to begin to experience many different people’s understanding of moments of perfection. Yes, the visuals and sounds will be invited from a broad array of people, scholars and artists.

This project should stimulate new research within academia and help shape current research. We are a consensus-driven driven people. These VR experiences will open many levels of discussion about the very nature of mathematics. E.P. Wigner told us that there is an unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics in the natural sciences. Einstein grasped our limited understanding when he said, “Time and space are modes by which we think and not conditions in which we live.”

Outcomes. How much more bright the world will be when we learn that harmony is profoundly and deeply part of our very being and we begin to see sparks of that perfection instantly passing through 202 notations at what would appear to be superluminal speeds such that we individually experience it even within a virtual reality program.

All of human history becomes current history. We will begin to learn from our mistakes.

The homogeneity and isotropy of the universe will be fully understood and embraced as a platform for our unfolding creativity and uniqueness.

Our research for the formulas for access to space-time, mass-charge, and gravity-electromagnetism are opened in unprecedented ways.

There will be much more to come, but personal transformation is the penultimate.

As a result of this open-source, open-ended, on-going program, our goal will be to have the user have epiphanies at various points throughout the experience such that they might say and one of the following:

“I’m in touch with the universe.”
“I’m at one with the universe.”
“I am beginning to know this universe.”
“I beginning to grasp what is infinite.”

Capacities. Simple math can put us in touch with our universe as well as with infinity. When we were young, E.P. Wigner told us that there was an unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics in the natural sciences. Wigner was echoed by Einstein when he asked, “How can it be that mathematics, being after all a product of human thought independent of experience, is so admirably adapted to the objects of reality?“ Then he says, “Time and space are modes by which we think and not conditions in which we live.” Much earlier, Spinoza said, “…measure, Time and Number are nothing other than modes of thinking, or rather, modes of imagining.” Others have gone so far as to say there the concurrence between mathematics and reality is absolute.

Our goal is for a spiritual and intellectual re-awakening. Our aim is to involve major segments of the market, our finest scholars, and many of our bigger businesses. Given my history with IBM, Microsoft, Apple, Google, Verizon, AT&T, and Bank of America, there will be a thrust for success that will hopefully be difficult to slow down.

The essential dynamics.
1. Continuity. The large-scale operation of our universe is precise. It starts deep within the continuity of numbers first known within pi within the infinitesimal. It is always the same and forever changing. Here the intuitions of Pythagoras were captured by Theano within her work, On Piety, as reported by Thesleff, Stobaeus, and Heeren, “… he (Pythagoras) did not say that all things come to be from number; rather, in accordance with number – on the grounds that order in the primary sense is in number and it is by participation in order that a first and a second and the rest sequentially are assigned to things which are counted.”

Numbers dominate the universe. We propose every infinitesimal, primordial sphere is first defined by numbers and the Planck base units are an approximation, an analogical construction to the actual numbers constantly generated from the first instance of time. For more…

These three facets of infinity become part of four very simple concepts which render a platform of essential and necessary building blocks to create this universe from scratch. [1] Paradigm shift and new model: We knew when we did the first chart that something special was happening. We couldn’t believe that there wasn’t already somebody who had a simple geometry of the universe. I remembered the extensive conversations with John Conway in Fine Hall and as we walked the Princeton campus for a long day. I checked. The closest anybody came was Kees Boeke (1957); he developed a base-10 scale of the smallest known to the largest known. He had 40 steps; we quickly re-did his calculations and found all 64 steps. Fully three years later, we decided that a base-2 scale had not been done and began to ask, “What’s next?” When we started working on the horizontally-scrolled chart, in my heart of hearts, I knew we were on the right path. We might make many naive and uninformed decisions along the way, but “…this has to be done. I’ll probably be working on it until my dying day! It’s a paradigm shift!”

[2] George Stoney (1874, Dublin): A lesser-known scholar but a key figure in the definition of a natural unit, George Johnstone Stoney will become better known through these efforts. His calculations were a first. Thankfully, his 1874 lecture was preserved and can be read online. A very dear scholar from Cambridge University, John Barrow, introduced to me with his publication: “Natural Units Before Planck.” Stoney’s calculations are not burden with Planck’s Constant. Among others, John Ralston has been quite critical of Planck’s constant. Stoney’s calculation for primordial time — 4.6054×10-45 — is much smaller than Planck’s calculation of 5.391247×10-44. Within the scale of the universe, that would be a substantial difference. Hopefully by shedding some light on it, we’ll get some help to clarify that disparity.

[3] Max Planck (1899, Berlin): Max Planck became a key figure within the world community long before he died. He was not only instrumental in getting Einstein into the limelight, he had received his Nobel prize in 1918 for his concepts within blackbody radiation and the concept of a quanta of energy.
