Dear Prof. Dr. Joachim von Braun:

You have been in the trenches long enough to know that there is something very incomplete with our models for life and the universe. Notwithstanding, I send my deep “Congratulations” and “Thanks” for all your work to find a way to have sustainable food production so people do not go to bed hungry.

Do you remember Vicki Weisskopf? He was a friend. I got to known him as the head of the MIT physics department and a member of the Pontifical Academy. Also, I was a reviewer of the Language of God;but on more fundamental issues, I wrote early to Francis Collins. Also, in the 1970s helping me to open doors at CERN was Lew Kowarski. I was not quite so blessed by Fabiola Gianotti. Yet, there are a few others with whom I have followed closely: Juan Maldacena, Donna Strickland, Edward Witten, and Antonino Zichichi.

A possible new model to be examined and tested uses Planck base units and applies base-2 notation. I find it endlessly fascinating.

Follow-up and further study: High Redshift Universe. On the Pontifical Academy’s website, sixth section down, of the “Final Statement of the Workshop on Astrophysics: The James Webb Space Telescope,” 21 April 2024. The statement about “first light” is key:

First light is also earliest light. The results of discovering well-formed (“mature”) and relatively metal rich galaxies with bright active galactic nuclei in the early universe, coupled with the confirmation of the dichotomy of the Hubble constant inferred from measurements of the Cosmic Microwave Background at the earliest times versus that directly measured (including by JWST) from galaxies at later cosmic epochs, highlights new challenges to the standard model of galaxy formation and cosmic expansion.”

“These new observations may suggest that important aspects in our understanding of the physics of the expansion of the universe and galaxy formation remain to be discovered and understood. Similarly, the high elemental abundances found in the early universe, if confirmed by future data, may challenge models for their formation and evolution.”
