Open Data Science Conference (ODSC)
ODSC East 2025 brought together AI and design experts that sparked inspiring discussions for our Big Board-little universe project. Our model—a chart of the universe from the Planck scale to the observable universe in 202 base-2 notations—offers a unique cosmological, totally-predictive, framework. This follow-up refines questions from the conference to bridge AI, design, and our work, seeking to enhance, visualize, and validate our model.
Questions for AI Experts:
Question: How can AI, particularly machine learning or generative models, simulate a universe defined by 202 base-2 notations, from the Planck scale to the observable universe? Which algorithms could handle exponential scaling across these scales?
Why It Matters: Our model uses a mathematical progression of scales, doubling from the smallest to the largest units. At ODSC East 2025, experts suggested graph neural networks or topological deep learning (e.g., TopoX, ODSC West 2024) to simulate this framework.

- Data Representation: Imagine doubling a value 202 times. If you start with the smallest conceivable scale (Planck units) and go to the entire observable universe there are only 202 steps involved. Each step, or notation, is a mathematical structure that connects all scales. As difficult as that is to imagine, that dataset is exponential notation and it does outline the universe. Now, how would you recommend structuring or analyzing it to uncover emergent patterns or relationships using AI tools?
- Context: The chart is data-rich, and AI could help identify hidden correlations.
- Next steps: For relational datasets or visualization techniques for high-dimensional data, experts might suggest tools like HPCC (High-Performance Computing Cluster), also known as DAS (Data Analytics Supercomputer), an open source, data-intensive computing system platform developed by LexisNexis Risk Solutions.
- Validation and Simulation: AI might help to validate a theoretical model of the universe that uses base-2 notations by simulating physical processes at different scales? What challenges might arise in ensuring accuracy across such a vast range?

- Ethical AI in Science: How can we ensure ethical AI practices when modeling something as fundamental as the universe’s structure, especially to avoid biases or overfitting to existing cosmological assumptions?
- Why: Our model challenges mainstream cosmology, so ensuring AI tools don’t reinforce establishment biases is critical. Experts might reference responsible AI practices from ODSC sessions.

Future work:
- Our work on this model that maps the universe from the Planck scale to the observable universe in 202 base-2 steps; it challenges traditional cosmological assumptions.
- Target Specific Experts: We are following up with Ryan Harter (Shopify) and Allen Downey (Brilliant.org), both speakers at ODSC East 2025. Their experience in data science education rendered practical insights that seem to align with our needs.
- AI Mini-Bootcamp: I was unable to particpate in these hands-on sessions to test our ideas with instructors who know how their tools (e.g., Python, LLMs, or RAG), however, I will follow-up with all of them to see how their tools might apply to our model.
- Network Strategically: Like most conferences, ODSC East had organized networking sessions throughout the AI Expo. A Demo Hall with about 60 vendors was where I discussed our real-world applications and possibility of using their tools. There were several who were attuned to what we were doing.
- Challenge the Narrative: Our work questions established cosmology so we ask, still trying to grasp the limitations of AI, “Could your AI framework test a universe model that doesn’t rely on the Big Bang?”
Questions will:
- Align with our focus on a mathematically driven, exponential universe model.
- Tap into ODSC East’s strengths in AI, data science, and practical training.
- Bridge AI’s computational power and design’s communicative potential to advance our project.
- Encourage experts to think creatively about applying their expertise to a novel framework.
