Charles Birch, Templeton Prize, 1990

Introduction

Charles Birch was introduced to me in July 1979 by a mutual friend, John B. Cobb Jr., a professor of Claremont Graduate University. Not long after that introduction, the two of them co-authored The Liberation of Life: From the Cell to the Community, Cambridge University Press, 1981 (ISBN0-521-23787-4).

July 1979: We were all at MIT for a conference, Faith, Science, and the Human Future, and both Birch and Cobb were part of the display of just 77 scholars from around the world.

Charles Birch had a special love for life and people. A deep respect. He had a quick, knowing smile, like a very kind-but-wise uncle.
